MX kindergarten teacher Mr. Robbie, a member of the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus (SFGMC) for the past 26 years, will soon join the chorus on the Lavender Pen Tour.
From October 7-15, the chorus, which in celebrating its 40th season, will tour five southern states – Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, South Carolina, and North Carolina – where people in the LGBTQ community do not enjoy the freedoms and rights that we have in the Bay Area and California.
The mission of the Lavender Pen Tour is to support and empower LGBTQ communities in these states and hopefully change hearts and minds along the way. All ticket proceeds from the tour’s performances will raise funds for local LGBTQ and other social justice organizations, so they can continue doing their vital work to dismantle biased and discriminatory laws. The Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir will also join the SFGMC on the tour.
Mr. Robbie has said, “It is a personal goal and milestone to be able to participate in such a historical event that will absolutely make a difference in our world and in the lives of those who hear our music and message of inclusivity and equality.”

This year, the annual Malcolm X Walk-a-Thon will be held on Saturday, October 28 from 10:00am-1:00pm. Last year, over half of the school participated and we raised $25,000 for Malcolm X. Let's try to raise even more this year! This year, kids will be encouraged to come in costume since the Walk-a-Thon will take place the weekend before Halloween!
The Walk-a-Thon is FUN and there's something for everyone! You can earn laps by walking (of course), reading, dancing, and so much more! Also, it includes free food, a bake sale, and prizes! Gift certificates for the top 2 students in EACH grade! Parties for the 3 classes with the most walkers! Large Walk-a-Thon envelopes will be coming home soon; keep an eye out for them.

One of the real strengths of Malcolm X is its people – a diverse, talented, and committed
group of parents, grandparents, guardians, and other caregiving adults who volunteer to
the school in both small and large ways. We are a powerful community.
This is reflected in our school motto, “Together We Can!” Because we are stronger together. So much of what makes our school great (including our fabulous art, dance, drama,
gardening, and music programs, our PTA afterschool classes, school supplies, field trips, our extensive library collection) would not exist in their present forms without the ongoing support of our school community and PTA. That support depends entirely on volunteers. And there are also innumerable other ways in which families contribute – including by volunteering in classrooms; managing our rolling drop-off program; working individually with kids; helping to green our school’s practices; donating supplies; providing technical support; editing the weekly newsletter, etree, and website; and so much more.
There are many things to be done, some of which have yet to be discovered. So hopefully you can also find your niche, and find a way that you feel good about contributing. The school needs you. As Volunteer Coordinators, we help connect people who are looking to help with the jobs and tasks that need to be done, and the folks who are in charge of particular projects or events. Esto se refleja en nuestro lema escolar, “Juntos Podemos!” Porque juntos somos más fuertes. Muchas de las cosas que hacen de nuestra escuela algo especial (incluyendo nuestros
fabulosos programas de arte, danza, drama, jardinería, música, clases extracurriculares del PTA, útiles escolares, paseos escolares y nuestra extensa biblioteca) no existirían sin el continuo apoyo de nuestra comunidad escolar y el PTA. Este apoyo depende totalmente de voluntarios. Y además hay otras maneras innumerables en las que las familias contribuyen, incluyendo siendo voluntarios en los salones de clase; organizando el programa de arribo, trabajando
individualmente con niños, ayudando a la escuela en las prácticas ecológicas, donando útiles escolares, apoyando en el soporte técnico, editando las noticias escolares, el etree, el sitio de internet, y mucho más.
Hay muchas cosas que hacer, algunas de ellas aún estan por descubrirse. Asi que ojalá puedas encontrar alguna manera de contribuir. La escuela te necesita. Como Coordinadoras de Voluntarios, nosotros ayudamos a conectar gente que quiere ayudar con los proyectos que necesitan ayuda y apoyo y con aquellas personas a cargo de dichos proyectos y/o

"Fine Print" By submitting an entry, the artist consents that it is his/her own original work and that he/she has all necessary rights and permissions to use included elements. The t-shirt contest team reserves the right to make adjustments and alterations to the winning entry to ensure that the reproduction of the image is of best quality. The winning artist releases to MX the exclusive right to artwork to be used for school promotional material. The winner(s) will be rewarded with a MX shirt featuring his/her design. No submissions will be returned.
The MX Fund is the PTA’s first fundraiser of the year. Donations help pay for Drama, Dance, Music, Gardening, Field Trips, Cultural Events, Community-Building Events, and more. We ask that every family give what they can. One useful guideline is one more month of what you budgeted for child care, preschool or summer camp for your child.

Ms Rivka is seeking artwork by students to use in a book she is writing about weedos! She is looking for: pictures of weedos, views of the garden, drawings of the different ingredients that make up a weedo, and other garden-related illustrations.
You can use markers, pencils, watercolor paints or other materials. You can also make a collage. Art should be on 8.5" x 11" or 9"x12” paper (standard paper size). Carefully completed color illustrations are encouraged.
Ms Rivka will review and select artwork to be published. Hand in your artwork to the envelope in the office labeled “Weedo Art Submissions.” Be sure to put your first and last name, your grade, and your teacher’s name of the back of your artwork. Art should be handed in by by June 15, or you can send it by mail over the summer to:

Every summer we rely on wonderful parent volunteers to keep the garden thriving. We're so lucky to have this resource for our kids!
Here's your chance to support the garden and also spend time in it during the summer. If you'd like to help, you can sign up for one or more weeks to be in charge of watering the garden. You come to the garden 2-3 times during your week and give it a good, thorough watering — this takes 60-90 minutes. Directions will go out out to all of the waterers once we have the schedule down. It's really fun and you can bring your kids to help!

Cada verano contamos con la ayuda de nuestros maravillosos padres de familia quienes voluntariamente ayudan a mantener el jardin durante las vacaciones. Somos muy afortunados de contar con este maravilloso recurso para nuestros niños!
Esta es una oportunidad para apoyar el jardin y ademas disfrutarlo durante el verano. Si te interesa ayudar, puedes apuntarte por una o mas semanas para estar a cargo de regar el jardin. Tendrias que visitar el jardin 2-3 veces durante tu semana y regarlo con suficiente cantidad de agua, aproximadamente entre 60 y 90 minutos. Una vez que tengamos un horario establecido, les haremos llegar las instrucciones de riego a todos aquellos que se hayan apuntado como voluntarios. Es muy divertido y puedes traer a tus hijos!

Join us for the MX Spring Fair on Saturday, May 6th from 11:00am-2:00pm! This is the last event of the 2016-17 school year. We will draw raffle tickets and award prizes! Lunch will be served, and there will be games – including a dunk tank! – and prizes for everyone. So please bring your dancing shoes and your "Together We Can" spirit!
Lunch and games will be provided for free! The 4th graders will be holding a bake sale with the proceeds benefitting the 5th grade field trip. See you there!
