WHAT IS THE MALCOLM X PTA?

The Malcolm X PTA is a critical part of our school community. The PTA:

  • Helps fund programs and extras that the state of California does not. Our PTA spends more than $480 per student on existing programs such as art, dance, music, drama, and physical education and recess support. We also pay for classroom supplies, performance tickets, library books, field trips, and so much more. The PTA raises money through membership, campaigns such as the Malcolm X Fund, and fundraising events such as the Walk-a-Thon, Read-a-Thon, Auction and Gala, and the Raffle.

  • Helps kids be successful. Research shows that kids do better in school when their parents are involved! There are so many ways to be involved at Malcolm X. You can participate in PTA meetings, hold an elected seat on the PTA board, volunteer at fundraisers, give school tours, or help in the classroom.

  • Sustains a great resource. The PTA keeps parents informed about the challenges our school faces and how to become part of the solution. The PTA helps coordinate expert speakers on a variety of topics related to education and parenting, sponsors Literacy Night and Discovery Night, and provides family support to the school’s many affinity groups (PCAD, ELAC, LGBTQ, Rainbow Families, Inclusion Families, FUSE and Balsa).

  • Builds community. The PTA helps bring families together through a variety of events including Project Connect, the Welcome Reception, Family Heritage Night, Kindergarten Information Night, Movie Nights, and the Spring Fair.

  • Creates a safe space for participation. Regular meetings allow members to share ideas, raise questions, and voice concerns. When allowed on campus, the PTA provides food and childcare so that families can more easily attend. Currently meetings are held virtually via zoom.

Governance

We need parents/guardians to help us have quorums at our membership meetings and also to consider serving as officers on our PTA Executive Board. The Malcolm X Executive Board and Committees play a crucial role in coordinating and supporting all the community-building events and fundraisers throughout the year.

The Malcolm X PTA Board is composed of parent volunteers, teacher representatives, Principal Hunt, and Vice Principal Morgan. The Board typically plans PTA events and activities for our school community, spearheads our fundraising efforts, and sets the annual PTA budget (approximately $200,000). PTA Board Members are elected and participate in monthly Board meetings. Board Members are elected annually and can hold a position for up to two years.

Committee Members are appointed and do not attend Board meeting or vote on issues. Committee members organize volunteers, plan events, and coordinate with the Board and other school leaders.

Consider filling one of our open positions! We provide support and orientation for incoming officers, so really no special experience, skills, or qualifications are required — just a desire to help our community thrive.
