The PTA is not allowed to spend funds on alcohol, so we are looking for parent donations to fund liberal libations. Your contributions help us generate more money for the school and ensure that there will be tasty cocktails, beer and wine on hand to enhance the evening's fun.
So instead of thinking about the outfit that you want to wear for the upcoming Havana Nights Auction/Dance Party, you might want to think about how good you will look taking on a volunteer shift or three. Seriously, though, we still have lots of open volunteer slots available.

As many of you know, this is the Year of the Reader in Berkeley! A wonderful part of our program is the home reading component.

Havana Nights, the Malcolm X 7th Annual Silent Auction and Dance Party, is only one month away. Coming up on February 25th, 2017, this is our biggest fundraiser for the year.
The adults-only event will have music from The Cuband, an alternative and fusion Cuban music band, as well as DJ Just-In. There will also be a photo booth, games, local beer and wine, and great Cuban food. There will be awesome auction items and general revelry by all.
Tickets are $20 until January 25th, $25 online after that, and $30 at the door. (Higher-priced tickets are available for those who have the means and want to donate more to the school!) Buy discounted tickets for yourselves, your friends, family, and neighbors. All proceeds go to support classroom supplies, drama, dance, music, gardening and other enrichment programs for all the children at Malcolm X Elementary.

Noches en la Habana! Boletos para la Cena-Baile de Malcolm X en preventa desde hoy hasta el 25 de Enero
Noches en la Habana, la séptima cena-baile y subasta anual de Malcolm X, será el próximo 25 de Febrero 2017, éste es nuestro mayor evento para recaudar fondos para nuestra escuela.
Este evento es sólo para adultos, habrá música de The Cuband, una banda de música alternativa y fusión Cubana, además del DJ Just-In. También habrá sesiones de fotos, juegos, cerveza, vino y comida cubana deliciosa. Contaremos también con un maravilloso surtido para la subasta y diversión para todos.
El costo de los boletos es de $20 hasta el 25 de Enero, $25 en linea después de esa fecha y $30 en la puerta el día del evento. (También contamos con boletos más caros para aquellos que quieren/pueden donar más dinero a la escuela!) Compra los boletos en descuento para ti, tus amigos, familiares y vecinos. The BUSD Research Symposium, Equity in the Bay: Making Our Schools Work for All Students, is open to families, educators, and community members and will be held January 21st, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Berkeley Adult School, 1701 San Pablo Ave.
The presentations by education researchers will cover a wide range of topics related to the challenges of making sure our schools work for all students. Some sessions are designed for all attendees, while others will be held simultaneously, allowing a choice of what to hear.
Malcolm X’s own Ms. Devin will be presenting her research at a talk titled Sometimes My Brain Tells Me to Be Bad, a study on the impact of using psychological theories with kindergarten boys who exhibit aggressive-disruptive behavior.
The final session features Berkeley High School students discussing Educational Equity in the Age of President Trump. The full program can be viewed online at http://www.berkeleyschools.net.
This free event is co-sponsored by BUSD and the Department of Educational Leadership at California State University East Bay.
Simposium de Investigación del Distrito Escolar Unificado de Berkeley: Equidad en Educación
El Simposium de Investigación de BUSD, Equidad en la Bahia: Como hacer para que nuestras Escuelas Funcionen para Todos los Estudiantes, esta abierto a las familias, educadores, y miembros de la comunidad el 21 de Enero, de 8:30 am a 12:30 pm en la Escuela de Berkeley para Adultos, 1701 San Pablo Avenue.
Las presentaciones dirigidas por investigadores educativos, cubrirán un amplio rango de temas relacionados con las dificultades para asegurarnos que nuestras escuelas funcionen para todos los estudiantes. Algunas sesiones están diseñadas para toda la audienca, mientras que algunas otras serán simultáneas, permitiendo elegir a cuál atender.

Come celebrate the many different families that make up our strong Malcolm X community on Tuesday, January 24th for our annual Family Heritage Night. Bring a family or favorite potluck dish and then stay to enjoy the live music by master Arabic percussionist Faisal Zedan! Additional catered food will be provided by our fabulous PTA. The potluck begins at 5:30 and the performance starts at 6:30.
Through an evening of art and dining, we reaffirm our school values of inclusion and togetherness.

Ven a celebrar las diferentes variedades de familias que forman parte de nuestra gran comunidad de Malcolm X el Martes 24 de Enero en nuestra Noche de Herencia Familiar. Trae tu platillo familiar favorito para compartir en un potluck y disfruta de la música en vivo del percusionista Arabe Faisal Zedan! Habra comida adicional a cargo de nuestro fantaástico PTA. El convivio comienza a las 5:30 y la música en vivo a las 6:30.

Calling all fifth-grade Malcolm X families! The deadline to register your fifth-grader for BUSD middle school is fast approaching (Friday, February 3rd). To help you and your fifth-grader decide which middle school to attend, the Malcolm X PTA is sponsoring Middle School Information Night at Malcolm X on Thursday, January 26th at 7 p.m. in the auditorium.
We will have recent Malcolm X graduates and their parents participating in a panel discussion. There will be students from King, Longfellow, Willard, Realm Charter School, and Oakland School for the Arts. Fifth-graders are encouraged to attend as they will have a chance to ask questions toward the end of the event.

The Thanksgiving Food Drive was such a success. Thank you. We are asking for your help again.
We are partnering with John Muir Elementary and the Berkeley Food Pantry to put together food bags for over 90 of our families. Our goal is to help families who depend on school breakfasts and lunches that students will be missing over Winter Break.
We will be collecting fresh and shelf stable foods on Tuesday December 13th at both Rolling Drop Off locations.

Recolección para el Banco de Comida en el receso de Invierno
La recolección de comida para el Día de Acción de Gracias fue un éxito, gracias! Necesitamos tu ayuda otra vez.
Junto con la Escuela John Muir y la Alacena de Berkeley (Berkeley Food Pantry) necesitamos juntar bolsas de comida para más de 90 de nuestras familias. Nuestro objetivo es ayudar a las familias que dependen de los desayunos y comidas de la escuela que los estudiantes no tendrán acceso durante el receso de invierno.
Estaremos recolectando comida fresca y enlatada el Martes 13 de Diciembre en las dos puertas de Rolling Drop Off.
