MX Craft Fair This Saturday!

Shop handmade for the holidays! Come to the MX Craft Fair this Saturday, December 3rd, from 10:00am to 2:00pm to do some winter holiday shopping!  Bring your friends, family, and neighbors.  In addition to shopping for locally handmade goods and services, we're planning crafts for the kids, a raffle of goods donated by the vendors, a bake sale, and a gift wrap table.

All proceeds from the activities and vendor table fees will go directly to the PTA to support the students and teachers at Malcolm X. Proceeds from the bake sale table will go towards the 5th grade class trip to Pigeon Point.

Venga a la Feria de Artesanía de MX este sábado, 3 de diciembre, de 10:00 am a 2:00 pm para hacer algunas compras de vacaciones de invierno! Traiga a sus amigos, familiares y vecinos. Además de comprar productos y servicios hechos a mano localmente, tendramos artesanías para los niños, una rifa de artículos donados por los vendedores, una venta de pasteles y una mesa de regalo. Todos los ingresos de las actividades y los honorarios de la mesa del vendedor irán directamente a la PTA para apoyar a los estudiantes y maestros en Malcolm X. Save the Date: Havana Nights, the MX 7th Annual Silent Auction!

The PTA will host the 7th Annual Silent Auction dance party, “HAVANA NIGHTS,” on Saturday, February 25th! This is our BIGGEST and only adults-only fundraiser for the year.

An update on construction from Principal Hunt

Construction is on track, and we are about to enter Phase 2.  Below is some information about what to look for and what to prepare your kids for (and please see the fact sheet below):

• A big fence will be going up on 12/2 in the interior courtyard from the corner of the amphitheater to the Ellis Street entrance.  Scaffolding will be going up on the yard behind the fence on 12/5.  There will be trucks coming in from King Street to deliver fence, scaffolding, and construction materials.
• Classes in the portables will be packing up to move back over the winter break; and Rooms 1, 3, 107, 206, 207, and 208 will be moving out to the portables. 
• The office will be moving to Room 104.
• The library will be reopening in January!

MX staff will work to make this pack-up and set-up happen as seamlessly as possible, but we can certainly use some help.  If you are a super-organizer with some time to volunteer as we approach winter break, please let your child's teacher know.

La construcción está en camino, y estamos a punto de entrar en la Fase 2. A continuación hay información sobre qué buscar y para qué preparar a sus hijos:

MX Movie Night TONIGHT!

What: Get out your warm blankets and chairs and enjoy movies and community! Bring a potluck item to the tables on the yard. Rain relocates to the auditorium.

Come even if you don’t have time to round up a potluck item! Non-MX families are welcome.

Volunteers Needed for Kindergarten Tour

Are you interested in volunteering to be a Parent Tour Guide?

It's time again to share our amazing school with prospective Kindergarten families for the 2017- 2018 school year! This is a terrific way to volunteer and support MX school. It takes minimal training. Most of the incoming families will be prospective Kindergarten parents, so parents of K and 1st graders are excellent as guides who can offer their firsthand knowledge of the process. Parents of upper grade students are also excellent for sharing their experiences at the school.

Tours are given on Tuesday and Thursday mornings starting November 15 and running through January 29. Tours begin at 8:30am and end at 9:30am. Occasionally parents stay a little longer asking questions or touring upper grade classrooms. There are 16 morning slots to fill, with 2 tour guides each.

If you would like to train to be a guide, you are welcome to accompany an upcoming tour that is convenient for you.

Mrs. Dalloway's Benefit Weekend for Malcolm X School

Mrs. Dalloway’s Bookstore is hosting a benefit for Malcolm X School Friday and Saturday, November 11th and 12th, 10 a.m. – 9 p.m., and Sunday, November 13th, 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.  Mrs. Dalloway's will reimburse Malcolm X School for 20% of the total purchases made by the school community.

This is a great opportunity to stock up on holiday gift items such as children's books, cookbooks, adult fiction and nonfiction, gardening books, merchandise, art, and gift certificates for teachers, family, and friends.

The Malcolm X library has given Mrs. Dalloway's a wish list so please check out MX's wish-list-shelf and consider donating a book to the library. The library will get a free book, every child at Malcolm X has an opportunity to read the donated book, and the PTA gets 20% of the purchase!  Online sales welcome.

Please make sure to keep your receipts and turn them in to the PTA box in the front office no later than Friday, November 18.  For online purchases, print out your order confirmation email, and turn this in as your receipt.

What’s New In Instructional Technology?

If you have been in the classroom of a 3rd-5th grade student recently, you may have seen a cart of Chromebooks (laptops) living there. Last summer, district-wide, the majority of 3rd-5th grade teachers completed the training to become Google Certified Educators and now have a larger toolbox of lessons that integrate our curriculum with technology.

Every 3rd grade classroom now has a class set of Chromebooks that is shared between two neighboring teachers, and nearly every 4th and 5th grade classroom has its own class set of Chromebooks. Integrating computers into students’ learning is akin to using a calculator in math class. While it’s a powerful tool, it isn’t the only way students are learning. Technology and screen time isn’t replacing other types of learning; it’s simply a tool that can make learning deeper or more personal and engaging.

Art Books for All

Ms. Bull, Malcolm X’s art teacher, has written a Friends and Family grant proposal through the Berkeley Public Schools Fund to expand and diversify the art room’s collection of books. Ms. Bull sees a great need for books that represent contemporary artists of color.

Ms. Bull says, “When I introduce contemporary artists that draw from current issues and culture, I am able to reach more of my students.  When we observe the work (sculpture, paintings, collage) of these artists, we have rich conversations and oftentimes there are obvious references that are accessible to the students.  They can then relate to the work and what they subsequently create holds more meaning to them.  I want all students to be able to see themselves in the art world and to understand that art is not just a thing of the past.  They too can make art and use it as a powerful communication tool.”

Libros de Arte para Todos

La Sra Bull, profesor de arte de Malcolm X, ha entregado una Propuesta de Subvención Amigos y Familiares a través del Fondo de Escuelas Públicas de Berkeley para ampliar y diversificar la colección de libros de la sala de arte. La Sra Bull ve como una gran necesidad proveer libros que representan a los artistas contemporáneos de color.

La Sra Bull dice: "Cuando introduzco artistas contemporáneos que sacan sus ideas de temas de hoy en día y de la cultura actual, soy capaz de major animar a mis estudiantes. Cuando observamos la obra (escultura, pintura, collage) de estos artistas, tenemos conversaciones ricas y muchas veces hay referencias obvias que sean accesibles a los estudiantes. A continuación, ellos pueden relacionarse con el trabajo, y lo que posteriormente crean posee más significado para ellos. A.M. Drop-Offs Can Be Safe and Easy

Mornings can be tough! Here are some tips to help keep mornings at MX safe and efficient for everyone.

Driving to School? 

Park in the neighborhood! And walk the last block to school. It's a nice way to spend some time with your kid(s) and connect with other families in the morning.

Use the Ellis Street Rolling Drop-Off: There's more room and it's much less stressful! With the addition of the portables, we've noticed more families using the King Street drop-off. Unfortunately, this has made an already tight situation on King Street even tighter, causing more delays for everyone and more stressed-out drivers! 

Biking to School?

Bikes are welcome in the Rolling Drop-Off: But bikes need to stay with the flow of traffic (just like cars). Need more time to unload the kids? Pull to the very front of the line (where drivers can see you) or hop up on the sidewalk.

El verano pasado, en todo el distrito, la mayoría de los profesores de 3er al 5º grado cumplieron su entrenamiento para convertirse en educadores certificados de Google y ahora tienen una caja de herramientas educativas más grande que integran el plan de estudios con la tecnología.

Cada salón de 3er grado tiene ahora un conjunto de Chromebooks que se comparte entre dos maestros vecinos, y casi todas las aulas 4º y 5º grado tienen su propio conjunto de Chromebooks. La integración de los ordenadores en el aprendizaje de los estudiantes es similar al uso de calculadoras en una clase de matemáticas. Si bien es una herramienta poderosa, no es la única manera como los estudiantes están aprendiendo. La tecnología y el tiempo de pantalla no están reemplazando otros tipos de aprendizaje; es simplemente una herramienta que puede hacer el aprendizaje más profundo o más personal y atractivo.

Art Books for All

Ms. Bull, Malcolm X’s art teacher, has written a Friends and Family grant proposal through the Berkeley Public Schools Fund to expand and diversify the art room’s collection of books. Ms. Bull sees a great need for books that represent contemporary artists of color.

Ms. Bull says, “When I introduce contemporary artists that draw from current issues and culture, I am able to reach more of my students. When we observe the work (sculpture, paintings, collage) of these artists, we have rich conversations and oftentimes there are obvious references that are accessible to the students. They can then relate to the work and what they subsequently create holds more meaning to them. I want all students to be able to see themselves in the art world and to understand that art is not just a thing of the past. They too can make art and use it as a powerful communication tool.”

Libros de Arte para Todos

La Sra Bull, profesor de arte de Malcolm X, ha entregado una Propuesta de Subvención Amigos y Familiares a través del Fondo de Escuelas Públicas de Berkeley para ampliar y diversificar la colección de libros de la sala de arte. La Sra Bull ve como una gran necesidad proveer libros que representan a los artistas contemporáneos de color. 

La Sra Bull dice: "Cuando introduzco artistas contemporáneos que sacan sus ideas de temas de hoy en día y de la cultura actual, soy capaz de major animar a mis estudiantes. Cuando observamos la obra (escultura, pintura, collage) de estos artistas, tenemos conversaciones ricas y muchas veces hay referencias obvias que sean accesibles a los estudiantes. A continuación, ellos pueden relacionarse con el trabajo, y lo que posteriormente crean posee más significado para ellos. Quiero que todos los estudiantes sean capaces de verse a sí mismos en el mundo del arte y para comprender que el arte no es sólo una cosa del pasado. Ellos también pueden hacer arte y utilizarlo como una poderosa herramienta de comunicación .”

Save the Date for the 2nd Annual MX Craft Fair!

Come to the MX Craft Fair Saturday, December 3rd, from 10:00am-2:00pm to do some winter holiday shopping. Bring your friends, family, and neighbors. In addition to shopping for locally handmade goods and services, we're planning crafts for the kids, a raffle of goods donated by the vendors, a bake sale and a gift-wrap table.

Interested in vending? Applications are open! We’re looking within our MX community for makers and small businesses to sell their wares.  A moderate/reasonable table fee will apply and vendors will be chosen by application.  A link to the online application can be found at http://bit.ly/2dK3RgP, but before applying, please read our vendor FAQs at http://bit.ly/2dSrX9C.

Ahorre la Fecha para la 2da Edición de la Feria de Artesanía MX!

Ven a la Feria de Artesanía MX el sábado, 3 de diciembre, de las 10:00a las 2:00 para hacer algunas compras para sus vacaciones y fiestas de invierno. Trae a tus amigos, familiares y vecinos. Además de la compra de bienes y servicios a nivel local hechos a mano, estamos planeando manualidades para los niños, un sorteo de los bienes donados por los vendedores, una venta de pasteles, y una mesa de envoltura de regalos.

Te interesa ser vendedor? Las solicitudes están abiertas! Estamos buscando en nuestra comunidad MX para los fabricantes y las pequeñas empresas para vender sus mercancías.
