Ms. Rivka is looking for someone to take over the job of coordinating the summer watering schedule this summer. Please help us keep this vital part of our Malcolm X community thriving over the summer! The garden needs to be watered all summer, and there are always very helpful volunteers who take on weeks of watering duty. We need a new person to coordinate these volunteers.
It's a really important and needed job, yet really easy and not time intensive—so it’s a win-win. The job basically entails soliciting volunteers through the newsletter and etree, putting together a schedule of the volunteers for each week, and sending out instructions and reminders.
The previous coordinator will be happy to send you all of the past documents and information, and you'd talk with Ms. Rivka as well to get instructions. This is a really fun and rewarding job! If you are interested contact Meredith Milet at mmilet@gmail.com.

Keep your EYES out for the Berkeley Lions Club eyeglass donation boxes at school for the rest of April! Every year the Berkeley Lions Club, a 100% volunteer not-for-profit organization, collects used eyeglasses, including readers and sunglasses, to donate to the less fortunate. So bring in your no-longer-used glasses, and collect them from family and friends. Look out for the collection boxes in:
· The teacher’s lounge (“Raffle Central”)
· The front office
· Room 105A (aka "the Family Room”)
Do YOU need new frames? If your family doesn’t have Medi-Cal or Medicaid, and needs assistance getting new prescription glasses for you or your child, the Lions can help. The goal of the Green Team is to divert waste from landfills. In March, Alameda County agency StopWaste performed a waste audit for us and discovered that approximately 60–80% of our school’s lunchroom food waste was going into the landfill! So the Student Run Green Team, consisting of 3rd, 4th and 5th graders, chosen out of more than 100 applicants, are now stewards of diverting MX’s lunchroom waste stream! The Green Team will receive monthly incentives for their efforts and members are supplied with aprons and grabbers to make their task of waste diversion and trash sorting a little easier.
Lupe Fuentes-Reyes, our dedicated, awesome lunchroom staff person, is assisting the team. Incentives, supplies, and new signage and cans are all a gift, funded through Nancy Deming, Alameda County K-12 sustainability co-ordinator, and StopWaste. BUSD’s new sustainability staff member, Susan Silber, will also further Malcolm X and other BUSD schools’ sustainability efforts.

El objetivo del Equipo Verde es desviar desechos alimentarios de vertederos. En Marzo, la agencia StopWaste del Condado de Alameda nos hizo una auditoría de desperdicios y descubrió que el 60-80% de los desperdicios alimenticios de nuestra cafetería van directo al vertedero! Asi que ahora el Equipo Verde Estudiantil, compuesto por estudiantes de 3ro, 4to y 5to grado, quienes fueron elegidos entre 100 concursantes, estará a cargo de depurar los desperdicios en la cafetería. El Equipo Verde recibirá incentivos mensuales por su trabajo, y contarán con delantales y el equipo necesario para hacer su trabajo más fácil.
Nuestra querida Lupe Fuentes-Reyes, quien es la encargada de la cafetería durante la comida, estará apoyando al equipo. Los incentivos, herramientas, nuevos señalamientos y contenedores son regalo de Nancy Deming, la Coordinadora del Programa Sostenible de K-12 del Condado de Alameda y StopWaste. Susan Silber, miembro del Programa de Sostenibilidad de BUSD, estará apoyando el esfuerzo de Malcolm X y otras escuelas.

The John Muir PTA, the Malcolm X PTA, and the North and South Berkeley Senior Centers have gotten together, under the leadership of the Alameda County Community Food Bank and the Berkeley Food Network, to fulfill our Family Engagement and Equity Specialist Jocelyn Foreman’s dream of setting up a mobile food pantry. As of this month, volunteers and coordinators from both schools and senior centers will be running a bi-monthly grocery distribution, on the second and fourth Fridays of the month from 2:00pm-4:00pm. These first distributions will include only produce and bread, but the food bank and Berkeley Food Network will help us expand the number and variety of food options as we go.
Upcoming dates: Friday, April 13, 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
The pantry will be set up in the parking lot of the South Berkeley Senior Center, right across Ashby from Malcolm X at 2939 Ellis St. The grocery distribution is open to all families of John Muir and Malcolm X students and the clients of the North and South Berkeley Senior Centers. Did you know that several Refugee Foster Children are already enrolled in Berkeley schools? The Refugee Foster Care program is now seeking more families in our community to become foster parents to refugee teens. This is a meaningful way to add another child to your family and also make a tremendous difference to a young person who needs a home.
Refugee Foster Care (RFC) resettles Unaccompanied Refugee Minors into long-term foster homes throughout the Bay Area and continues supportive services to both the youth and families. Working throughout eight counties, we are the only program in the Bay Area serving these youths. Be part of an international effort to protect some of the world’s most vulnerable children. You’ll provide a life filled with hope to a refugee youth, and we’ll be with you every step of the way.

El Programa de Adopción de Niños Refugiados está buscando más familias en nuestra comunidad que pudieran ser padres adoptivos de estos adolescentes refugiados. Al hacer ésto harías una diferencia tremenda en la vida de estos jóvenes que necesitan un hogar, ademaás de agregar un miembro más a tu familia.
El Programa de Adopción de Niños Refugiados (RFC, siglas en Inglés) acomoda a menores de edad que fueron admitidos como refugiados (y no tienen algún miembro adulto de su familia acompañándolos) con familias adoptivas a largo plazo alrededor de toda el Area de la Bahía y continúa ofreciendo servicios de apoyo tanto para los niños como las familias adoptivas. Trabajamos en los 8 condados y somos el único programa en el Area de la Bahía apoyando a estos niños. Forma parte de un esfuerzo internacional para proteger a algunos de los niños más vulnerables del mundo. Mientras tu ofreces una vida llena de esperanza a estos jóvenes refugiados, estaremos apoyaándote a cada paso.
