Mark Your Calendar for the Walk-a-Thon!

This year, the annual Malcolm X Walk-a-Thon will be held on Saturday, October 28 from 10:00am-1:00pm. Last year, over half of the school participated and we raised $25,000 for Malcolm X. Let's try to raise even more this year! This year, kids will be encouraged to come in costume since the Walk-a-Thon will take place the weekend before Halloween!

The Walk-a-Thon is FUN and there's something for everyone! You can earn laps by walking (of course), reading, dancing, and so much more! Also, it includes free food, a bake sale, and prizes! Gift certificates for the top 2 students in EACH grade! Parties for the 3 classes with the most walkers! Large Walk-a-Thon envelopes will be coming home soon; keep an eye out for them.

Este año el Ca-mi-na-tón anual de Malcolm X se llevará a cabo el Sábado 28 de Octubre de 10:00am-1:00pm. El año pasado, más de la mitad de la escuela participó y recolectamos $25,000 para Malcolm X. Vamos a intentar recolectar aún más éste año! Este año,

Volunteer at Malcolm X

One of the real strengths of Malcolm X is its people – a diverse, talented, and committed
group of parents, grandparents, guardians, and other caregiving adults who volunteer to
the school in both small and large ways. We are a powerful community.

This is reflected in our school motto, “Together We Can!” Because we are stronger together. So much of what makes our school great (including our fabulous art, dance, drama,
gardening, and music programs, our PTA afterschool classes, school supplies, field trips, our extensive library collection) would not exist in their present forms without the ongoing support of our school community and PTA. That support depends entirely on volunteers. And there are also innumerable other ways in which families contribute – including by volunteering in classrooms; managing our rolling drop-off program; working individually with kids; helping to green our school’s practices; donating supplies; providing technical support; editing the weekly newsletter, etree, and website; and so much more.

There are many things to be done, some of which have yet to be discovered. So hopefully you can also find your niche, and find a way that you feel good about contributing. The school needs you. As Volunteer Coordinators, we help connect people who are looking to help with the jobs and tasks that need to be done, and the folks who are in charge of particular projects or events. Please email us to tell us how you would like to contribute to

Una de las grandes fortalezas de Malcolm X es su gente – una comunidad diversa, talentosa y
comprometida de padres, abuelos y guardianes quienes voluntariamente contribuyen a la escuela de maneras grandes y pequeñas. Somos una comunidad poderosa.

Esto se refleja en nuestro lema escolar, “Juntos Podemos!” Porque juntos somos más fuertes. Muchas de las cosas que hacen de nuestra escuela algo especial (incluyendo nuestros
fabulosos programas de arte, danza, drama, jardinería, música, clases extracurriculares del PTA, útiles escolares, paseos escolares y nuestra extensa biblioteca) no existirían sin el continuo apoyo de nuestra comunidad escolar y el PTA. Este apoyo depende totalmente de voluntarios. Y además hay otras maneras innumerables en las que las familias contribuyen, incluyendo siendo voluntarios en los salones de clase; organizando el programa de arribo, trabajando
individualmente con niños, ayudando a la escuela en las prácticas ecológicas, donando útiles escolares, apoyando en el soporte técnico, editando las noticias escolares, el etree, el sitio de internet, y mucho más.

Hay muchas cosas que hacer, algunas de ellas aún estan por descubrirse. Asi que ojalá puedas encontrar alguna manera de contribuir. Thank you, families! We've now raised over $30,000 for our kids and school. Please help us reach our $55,000 goal and fully fund Malcolm X's amazing drama, dance, and music programs, PE and literacy coaches, and our much-loved community events.

We need all of you to help if you can. Any amount counts. No donation is too small – $5, $10, $20. It all adds up in a school this size. If you can, donate more! The PTA hopes to spend
more than $400 per student this year, but this level of funding cannot happen without your support.

Calling all MX Parents and Teachers! 

Be a part of our continuing Malcolm X history by designing our limited edition 2018 MX T-shirt.

Submission deadline is Friday, September 29th, 2017.

GUIDELINES

• Must include the words "Malcolm X Elementary School" in any form

• Must include the year "2018”

• Final T-shirt will be a maximum of three ink colors, including black

• T-shirt fabric can be almost any color so consider that in your design

• Design for front of t-shirt only

• If submitting a hand drawing, please submit no larger than 8.5 x 11 format

MX Fund for Fall 2017--Donate Now!

The MX Fund is the PTA’s first fundraiser of the year. Donations help pay for Drama, Dance, Music, Gardening, Field Trips, Cultural Events, Community-Building Events, and more.  We ask that every family give what they can. One useful guideline is one more month of what you budgeted for child care, preschool or summer camp for your child. 

Calling All MX Artists!

Do you love to draw, paint, or sketch?
Do you love our MX School Garden?
Would you like to see your work published?

Ms Rivka is seeking artwork by students to use in a book she is writing about weedos! She is looking for: pictures of weedos, views of the garden, drawings of the different ingredients that make up a weedo, and other garden-related illustrations.

You can use markers, pencils, watercolor paints or other materials. You can also make a collage. Art should be on 8.5" x 11" or 9"x12” paper (standard paper size). Carefully completed color illustrations are encouraged.

Ms Rivka will review and select artwork to be published. Hand in your artwork to the envelope in the office labeled “Weedo Art Submissions.” Be sure to put your first and last name, your grade, and your teacher’s name of the back of your artwork. Art should be handed in by by June 15, or you can send it by mail over the summer to:

The MX garden needs your help this summer!

Every summer we rely on wonderful parent volunteers to keep the garden thriving. We're so lucky to have this resource for our kids!

Here's your chance to support the garden and also spend time in it during the summer. If you'd like to help, you can sign up for one or more weeks to be in charge of watering the garden. You come to the garden 2-3 times during your week and give it a good, thorough watering — this takes 60-90 minutes. Directions will go out out to all of the waterers once we have the schedule down. It's really fun and you can bring your kids to help!

El jardin de MX necesita tu ayuda este verano!

Cada verano contamos con la ayuda de nuestros maravillosos padres de familia quienes voluntariamente ayudan a mantener el jardin durante las vacaciones. Somos muy afortunados de contar con este maravilloso recurso para nuestros niños!

Esta es una oportunidad para apoyar el jardin y ademas disfrutarlo durante el verano. Si te interesa ayudar, puedes apuntarte por una o mas semanas para estar a cargo de regar el jardin. Tendrias que visitar el jardin 2-3 veces durante tu semana y regarlo con suficiente cantidad de agua, aproximadamente entre 60 y 90 minutos. Una vez que tengamos un horario establecido, les haremos llegar las instrucciones de riego a todos aquellos que se hayan apuntado como voluntarios. Es muy divertido y puedes traer a tus hijos!

Spring Fair Tomorrow!

Join us for the MX Spring Fair on Saturday, May 6th from 11:00am-2:00pm! This is the last event of the 2016-17 school year. We will draw raffle tickets and award prizes! Lunch will be served, and there will be games – including a dunk tank! – and prizes for everyone. So please bring your dancing shoes and your "Together We Can" spirit!

Lunch and games will be provided for free! The 4th graders will be holding a bake sale with the proceeds benefitting the 5th grade field trip. See you there!

Important Reminders for MX Families

• Dogs are not allowed on campus at anytime! Please do not bring your dogs onto campus when dropping off or picking up students.

• Riding bikes, skateboards, scooters, and hoverboards are not allowed on campus.

• Please do not double-park during drop-off and pick- up. Use the Rolling Drop-Off Zones, or park nearby and walk your child into school.

• Our Lost and Found is getting full! Please check the Lost and Found for items your child may have lost! 

Recordatorios Importantes

• ¡Los perros no están permitidos en el campus en cualquier momento! Por favor, no trae a tu perro al campus al dejar o recoger a los estudiantes.

Attention Amateur (and Professional) Videographers!

Our arts program needs more videographers to record our amazing shows. We have two very talented volunteers who are trying to do all of our shows this year – THANK YOU! However, we need a list of volunteers.

Here is the job description:

1. Volunteer to film a show; it can be a show that your

   child in participating in or not.

2. Bring your video camera to the show along with a

   tripod. (We have extra tripods at MX in our sound

   room.)

3. Record the show!

4. Upload the show to our MX Vimeo site OR send the

   recording to Ms. Cannon for uploading.

5. Sign up to do it again!

You can edit the show after you get home if you would like, or one of the artists can do it after you send it to us.

This is a simple job but it is so important to our school and our arts program. Please contact Ms. Candy Cannon at candycecannon@berkeley.net for more information.

As many of you may know, our art teacher, Ms. Bull, is on maternity leave. I am taking her place during her absence and wanted to introduce myself to you and let you know how honored and happy I am to be working with your 1st-, 2nd-, 4th-, and 5th-grade artists! My name is Louise Paige. I am an MX parent and have worked as a 3rd-4th-5th classroom teacher, and also as an art teacher in camps and in the after-school program at Sticky Art Lab. New student artwork will be going up soon in the school hallways, so be sure to stop and take a look!

Save the Date for the Spring Fair

Please join us for the MX Spring Fair on Saturday, May 6, 11:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m.!

This is the last event of the 2016–2017 school year— raffle tickets will be drawn and prizes awarded, lunch will be served, and there will be games and prizes for everyone. Not to mention a dunk tank! So please bring your dancing shoes and your "Together We Can" spirit!

Lunch and games will be provided free. The 4th grade will be holding a bake sale, with the proceeds benefiting the 5th-grade field trip.

Separa la fecha para la Feria de Primavera

Por favor acompáñanos en la Feria de Primavera de MX, el Sábado 6 de Mayo, de 11:00 am a 2:00 pm!

Este será el último evento del año escolar 2016-2017, el sorteo de la rifa se llevará a cabo y los premios se entregarán también. Ademaás habrá comida y juegos y premios para todos. También tendremos un tanque de agua para juegos! Asi que por favor ponte tus zapatos para bailar y tu espíritu de “Juntos podemos”!

La comida y juegos serán gratis. Los alumnos de 4to grado estarán participando con una venta de reposteria, lo que se recaude en esta venta será utilizado en el paseo de 5to grado.

Raffle Ends Monday, May 1!

This is the LAST WEEKEND to sell your raffle tickets. Sell your raffle tickets. No regrets!

Remember... all students who sell $40 worth of tickets receive a Malcolm X highlighter, $100 or more will get you a Malcolm X frisbee, $200 or more will get you a Malcolm X measuring tape/level, and $300 or more will get you a Malcolm X carabiner. Be a Raffle Superseller!

PTA volunteers will collect all remaining money and tickets (sold and unsold) in the Teachers' Lounge on Monday, May 1, 7:50–8:10 a.m. Please make sure your children return their ticket stubs and money to be eligible for their Malcolm X prizes, top-selling class prizes, and top-selling individual prizes. Please arrive early for turn-in, as it will be a busy morning.

While selling tickets this weekend, be sure to share that proceeds from our raffle help support our wonderful arts and literacy programs here at Malcolm X. We are fortunate to live in a community that values these programs and that values public education.

La Rifa termina el Lunes 1ero de Mayo!

Este es el ULTIMO FIN DE SEMANA para vender sus boletos de la rifa. Vendan sus boletos de la rifa y no se arrepentirán!

Recuerden... todos los estudiantes que vendan $40 de boletos reciben un marcador de Malcolm X, quienes vendan $100 o más reciben un frisbee de Malcolm X, $200 o más equivalen a una cinta de medir de Malcolm X, y $300 o maás reciben un mosquetón de Malcolm X. Anímate a ser un Supervendedor de la Rifa!

Los voluntarios del PTA estarán recolectando todo el dinero y boletos (vendidos y no vendidos) en la Sala de Maestros el Lunes 1 de Mayo, de 7:50 a 8:10 am. Por favor asegúrate que tus hijos regresen sus boletos y dinero para ser elegibles para premios de Malcolm X, premios al saloón con mayor número de ventas, y los premios individuales para quienes vendan el mayor número de boletos. Por favor lleguen temprano a la escuela para entregar sus boletos, ya que será una mañana ocupada.

Mientras vendan boletos este fin de semana, asegúrate de compartir a los compradores que el dinero recaudado de la rifa suplementa nuestros maravillosos programas de arte y literatura aqui en Malcolm X. Somos afortunados de vivir en una comunidad que valora estos programas y que valora la educacioón pública.
